In the event of driver shortages, the temptation to quickly fill an empty position to avoid undelivered cargo costing your company money can be strong. However, hiring unfit drivers who pose a risk to themselves, your company, and the public may cost you more money in the long run.
According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), truck crashes result in roughly 3,800 fatalities each year. While truck crashes are not always the commercial driver’s fault and can be caused by inattentive driving or driving in a trucker's blind spots, it is still crucial to employ the best drivers to minimize the risks. Hiring top-quality drivers is essential regardless of who is at fault in an accident.
Characteristics of Risky Drivers
During the hiring process, it's important to consider the following risks:
- Medical conditions and physical health—The FMCSA lists several medically disqualifying conditions for commercial drivers, including hearing loss, vision loss, epilepsy and insulin use. Sleep apnea is also gaining attention as a serious driving risk, as it can lead to chronic fatigue and performance problems. Obese drivers are also at risk for poor driving posture and back pain. Consider how drivers take care of their own physical health, including their tobacco use, exercise and diet.
- Young or inexperienced drivers—Young drivers between the ages of 18 and 25 can also pose a significant risk to your company due to their lack of driving experience and willingness to speed and drive recklessly. If you do employ young drivers, consider creating a safety training program and regularly educating them on safe driving.
- Personality and behavior—Personality characteristics such as aggression towards others, getting angry or frustrated easily, and distracted behavior can translate into unsafe driving behaviors. Drivers who cannot control their impulses, including road rage, can also be a risk.
